Injury Comparison

http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/121372045/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0

Overall, 4.2 injuries per 1000 climbing hours were reported, overuse injuries accounting for 93% of all injuries. Inflammatory tissue damages to fingers and wrists were the most common injury types. The multivariate analysis showed that overweight and practicing bouldering generally implied an increased primary injury risk, while there was a higher re-injury risk among male climbers and a lower risk among the older climbers.

To provide a reference point, bicycling has 6 injuries per 1000 hours or is 143% more likely to result in injury.

Bicycling is an approved use at Palisades Interstate Park.

Recreation and Tourism Financial Impact

The Outdoor Recreation Coalition of America (ORCA) reported that 4.1% of Americans participated in some form of climbing in 2001.

By using those participation rates as a basis, then 4.1% of 11 million, the population estimate of NY City and Northeastern New Jersey, we find that there are more than 450,000 potential users of the Palisades Interstate Park's natural and most prominent resource, the cliffs, for recreational climbing purposes.

The New Jersey Department of Tourism has devoted much effort to quantifying the amount of money spent per day by visitors and found that each person spent $107 per day in 2008. If Palisades Interstate Park were to become a climbing resource for only 1/3 of the potential local users on a once a year basis, without including the out of state tourists it would attract, then the NY/NJ Metropolitan Area could see an increase in tourism revenues in the amount of $16,050,000.00 (Sixteen Million $$ +).

According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's (SGMA) analysis of the Superstudy of Sports Participation for the 2005 calendar year, Active Lifestyle Sports remain a hot commodity for the American public.
